Steve Shankle

Division Director Steve Shankle (left) and staff member Shuai Lu discuss progress on an Energy and Environment Directorate "seed" project funded through Laboratory Directed Research and Development.

Steve Shankle is director of the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division within Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Energy and Environment Directorate. He is responsible for expanding and advancing PNNL's nationally recognized technical capabilities and programs related to the electric grid of the future and the efficient use of energy in buildings, in a division consisting of more than 200 staff members in four technical groups.

Steve's career at PNNL began in 1984 and has spanned technical and managerial assignments in carbon management, buildings energy efficiency, techno-economic analysis of energy efficiency technologies, and energy efficiency policy analysis.

Prior to his current role, he was a senior analyst supporting EED's Planning and Analysis Group, where he provided energy and carbon analysis focused on informing and improving strategic decision making. He previously served as deputy manager for the FutureGen Project, as well as director of finance and administration for the client organization, FutureGen Industrial Alliance. As manager of PNNL's Carbon Management Initiative, Steve helped align PNNL capabilities with U.S. energy and climate challenges through strategic, targeted R&D investments.

Previously, Steve managed all aspects of the Technology Systems Analysis Group — from staff development to budgeting and business development. He also led the economic impact analysis that estimated impacts of manufacturer standards for commercial heating, cooling, and water equipment in the Building Technologies Program, and was project manager or principal investigator for several projects, including a four-year stint with the Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) Metrics Project, and numerous energy and climate-related projects of regional and national importance.

Steve earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, and a master's degree in Economics from the University of Washington.
