Mr. Nicholls has over thirty-two years of experience at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), as both program manager and analyst. During this time, he has been primarily dedicated to serving the buildings energy efficiency mission of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Mr. Nicholls has a proven track record of successfully working closely with DOE leadership to help plan and execute programs to increase the efficiency of the nation’s buildings. Mr. Nicholls has managed large and complex programs involving multidisciplinary PNNL staff, subcontractors, and experts from other national laboratories. As an analyst, he brings an extensive knowledge of energy science and technology to estimations of the potential national impact of DOE programs.

Research Interests

  • Analyzing the role on-site renewables and transactively controlled end-use technologies can play in cost effectively increasing the resiliency and environmental performance of military bases, campuses and buildings.
  • Assessing the potential role buildings energy efficiency can play, across the spectrum from standards to applied R&D, in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.
  • Understanding the full economic and environmental costs and benefits of greenhouse gas mitigation options including net-zero energy buildings and central plant supply options.
